The Ouderkerkerplas represents a part of the green Amstelland area. It lies between the highways A9 and the A2.
The Ouderkerkerplas is close to Amstelveen and a popular place for sunbathing, swimming, cycling, horse riding, camping and hiking, especially for families with children. It is also famous for windsurfing and diving. The recreation area covers about 127 acres.
It is an important area nesting site for birds, that also stay there during the winter.
The lake, South of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel is man-made and very deep (±45 m), because its sand had been used for the construction of the highway A9.
Because of the depth, salt water of the North Sea flows in and therefore the water does not freeze in the wintertime.
