The Frederik Hendrikbuurt

The Frederik Hendrikbuurt is a part of the district Westerpark and was constructed in the last quarter of the 19th century. It is situated between the Singelgracht and the Kostverlorenvaart.

The Frederik Hendrikbuurt is named after the Frederik Hendrikstraat and – plantsoen (Frederik Hendrik street and public gardens). The streets bear the names of Frederik Hendrik himself, city holder of the Netherlands in the first half of the 17th century, and his contemporaries such as Hugo de Groot and Amalia van Solms.

Between the 17th century and the beginning of the 20th century the Zaagmolenbuurt was situated over here. By that time, a lot of windmills could be found, to saw the wood for the constructioning of ships and houses. With the arrival of the steam machine, these mills gradually lost their function.

Therefore nowadays you can only find one mill remaining. This is Windmill De Otter, located along the Kostverlorenvaart.

Since 1990 the Frederik Hendrikbuurt isformed by the Staatsliedenbuurt and the Spaarndammerbuurt.

Since 1929 the district has its own tram line (tram 3), running along the Frederik Hendrikstraat.
