The Kinkerbuurt is a part of Amsterdam West and a component of Oud West. The heart of the district is formed by the Kinkerstraat, which gets passed by the tram lines 7 and 17. The Kinkerbuurt also has a daily market located at the Ten Katestraat, called the Ten Katemarkt.
The Kinkerbuurt was constructed at the beginning of the twentieth century, at a time when Amsterdam was extencing strongly. Similarly as Amsterdam West and East, the houses were constructed badly and fast, in the so called revolutiebouw (revolutionary construction).
The streets were named after writers and poets, whereof Johannes Kinker is the most famous one as a result of his street name.
The worst block-systems had been demolished in the years seventy and eighty within the scope of the town renewal.
During the last years the Kinkerbuurt experienced a big reassessment. The house prices strongly increased, attracting more and more people with a higher income!
