The Rembrandtpark

The Rembrandtpark is a municipal park situated in Amsterdam West towards the border of the district De Baarsjes. The Rembrandtpark has been devised as a component of the General Development Plan (Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan - AUP). Up to the years fifty the horticulture area of the Sloterpolder was situated over here.

After the displacement of the vegetable gardens to the Louwesweg and surroundings, the Rembrandtpark was arranged and was named after the famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn in 1958. Just at the beginning of the years seventy the future Rembrandtpark was effectively laid out. Inside of the park you can find the oldest children's farm of Amsterdam, 'the Uylenburg'.

The Rembrandtpark forms a green buffer area between the compact built pre-war city area and the open development structure of the Western Horticulture Cities. The western side of the Rembrandtpark is limited by the ring road A10, the northern part by the Jan Evertsenstraat and the southern side by the Cornelis Lelylaan. The park is also split by the by the Postjesweg.

Since 1990 the Rembrandtpark belongs to the district Slotervaart.

From 2006 to 2008 a large maintenance took place in the Rembrandtpark. At several places the water abundance, caused by rain, is tried to be solved by constructing lakes and locks. Furthermore the water brinks get restored and at the entry ways information labels will get placed. Also the playground at the Willem Schoutenstraat will be extended and renewed.
