Amsterdam West

Amsterdam West is a part of Amsterdam and situated in the west of the Singelgracht. The development of the western town extensions started in the last quarter of the 19th century with the construction of the Spaarndammerbuurt, Staatsliedenbuurt, Frederik Hendrikbuurt, Kinkerbuurt and the surroundings of the Overtoom.

Since 1990 those areas represent the districts Westerpark and Oud West.

Between 1920 and 1940 new town extensions were built on the territory of the former municipality Sloten (North Holland), for example the Admiralenbuurt, the plan West (surroundings Mercatorplein) and the surroundings Surinam square. Since 1990 those areas form the district De Baarsjes.

Since 1990 the Hoofddorppleinbuurt represents a part of the southern district which is nowadays the Oud Zuid area.

In the years 1930 and 1940 the Bos en Lommer area (situated in the North of Amsterdam-West) has been built, which nowadays is a stand-alone district.

As from the year 1950 the New-West (Nieuw-West) were built, better known as the western horticulture cities which encircle the districts Slotermeer, Geuzenveld, Slotervaart, Overtoomse Veld and Osdorp. Since 1990 these areas form the districts Geuzenveld/Slotermeer, Slotervaart/Overtoomse Veld and Osdorp.

As from 1990 the districts Nieuw Sloten, Oostoever (part of the Slotervaart) and De Aker (part of Osdorp) were subjoined.

Amsterdam West is a green area including the Erasmuspark as well as the Rembrandtpark, which invite everyone to stroll around!
