The Hoofddorppleinbuurt

The Hoofddorppleinbuurt is a part of Amsterdam’s Oud-Zuid district, containing about 11 500 inhabitants and covering a surface of 96.71-hectare. It is mainly a living area with a low percentage of companies and other businesses.

The Hoofddorppleinbuurt is limited by the Surinam Square (South side), Surinam street, Schinkel, A10 (northern section), Einsteinweg, Henk Sneevlietweg (northern talus) and the Westlandgracht.

The quarter was constructed in the years twenty on the territory of the in 1921 annexed municipality Sloten. Some streets at the Jacob Marisstraat were still built by the municipality Sloten.

The streets have been named after 19th-century painters and places coming from the southwest of Amsterdam. Since 1927 the district is linked with the surroundings of the Amstelveenseweg via the Zeilbrug.

As from 1929 tram line 1 had its terminus at the Hoofddorpplein. This line was replaced by tram line 2 in 1948, which was extended via Heemstedestraat to Slotervaart in 1975.

Until the classification into town parts, the Hoofddorppleinbuurt determined a component of the Overtoomse Veld (Overtoomse Field). As from 1990 the district belonged to the South district, which was changed into Amsterdam Oud-Zuid in 1998.
