The Adriaan Windmill

East of the main square, on the far bank of the river Spaarne, is the tall, picturesque Adriaan Windmill. A visit to its elevated platform offers a wonderful view over central Haarlem.

'Molen de Adriaan', as it known locally, is a 'smock' mill (so called because of its resemblance to 18th century workmen's smocks). Built by a local merchant in the late 18th century, it had a varied working life until it burnt down in 1932. It has been completely restored in recent years and is once again a beautiful landmark, commanding a fine view of two stretches of the Spaarne from its position at the apex of a bend in the river.

Inside, there are exhibits on windmill technology and audiovisual virtual tours of the river Spaarne and its most interesting and attractive features. A shop is also on hand for souvenirs. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement and the windmill can be seen in full operation on Saturdays, weather permitting.
