The Sloterplas – ( The Sloter Lake )

The Sloterplas lies in the middle of the Western horticulture cities of Amsterdam. The lake was dug between 1948 and 1956 and is approximately 30 meters deep.

As a component of the General Expansion Plan (Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan – A.U.P.) of 1935 the low levelled Sloterdijkermeerpolder situated in the middle of the rural area of Sloten was intended for sand extraction, to build up the heightened neighbouring horticulture cities Slotermeer, Geuzenveld, Slotervaart and Osdorp.

Among those constructions a park was realised, yielding a large recreation area right in the middle of the neighbourhood. The fertile top layer of peat and clay was used to elevate the Sloterpark around the lake.

In 1957, the Sloterparkbad opened its doors. In 1973 a covered swimming pool was added, which in 2001 was replaced by a new building to meet the requirements of professional swim sport!

The Sloterplas is also in requisition for sail, canoe, fishing and dive sport. In June 2006 the first triathlon took place.

With the institution of the town parts in 1990, Sloterplas became shared by the three districts Geuzenveld/Slotermeer, Slotervaart/Overtoomse Veld and Osdorp.
