Zuid Oost is one of the 15 boroughs of the municipality Amsterdam in the province North Holland, that consists of four residential areas Bijlmermeer, Venserpolder, Gaasperdam and the village Driemond as well as a business park called Amstel III / Bullewijk, which includes the recreational "Arena Boulevard" area.
Amsterdam Zuid Oost has approximately 86,000 inhabitants and consists of some 38,000 houses. Over 130 nationalities create a multicultural atmosphere. 30% Of the inhabitants is of Dutch origin, 30% of Surinam origin, 23% of African origin, 6% of Dutch Antillean origin and 2% of Moroccan origin.
Geographically, Amsterdam Zuid Oost is an exclave of Amsterdam, not directly bordering any other borough of the city, with a surface of 22.08 km².
Initially the area was part of the agricultural municipality Weesperkarspel. In the sixties the decision was made to build a new city, which made the Weesperkarspel disappear and annexed to the municipality Amsterdam in 1966. The oldest district in Zuid Oost is the Bijlmermeer.
Bijlmermeer was envisioned as a town of the future, build in accordance with the principles of the Swiss architect Le Corbusier. In Bijlmer (with Bijlmer-Centrum, D-buurt, F-buurt, H-buurt, E-buurt, G-buurt and K-buurt) runs a large-scale project for town renewal to approximately 2010, which has seriously changed the aspect of this area since 1992.
An important shopping centre is the Amsterdamse Poort and every Monday and Thursday a market takes place at the Anton de Komplein.
The construction of the Bijlmermeer began in 1963. In total, 18,000 houses were built, whereof 13,000 are flats in apartment blocks. Architect of the Bijlmermeer is Siegfried Nassuth. The first apartment block, named Hoogoord, was completed in 1968. The last housing block of 13,000 flats was completed in 1975.
You can easily reach the south-eastern area of Amsterdam when taking the train and getting off at the stations: Amsterdam Bijlmer Arena, Duivendrecht and station Diemen Zuid. You can also hop on the tram lines 50, 53 and 54.

- Broekzijdse polder (the meadow area between Gaasperdam and the river of the Gein)
Much of the green environment of Amsterdam Zuid Oost belongs to the area of the Amstelland.
